Whether you're on the road or off it, breakdowns can happen. Luckily, these days, a mobile phone is all that's needed to call for roadside assistance. However, it can sometimes take time for that help to arrive, so it's a good idea to keep a roadside emergency kit in the trunk.
You can get some kinds, like a first-aid kit, ready-made. There are also tire-repair kits and more general safety kits for sale online, among others. You can even make your own kit yourself if you want to.
What should be in an emergency kit varies. However, you should base your packing decisions, in part, on your vehicle's age, its condition, the type of driving you do most often, your seasonal weather, and your overall climate. You should also include some universal basics and a few helpful extras, including fluids you commonly need to replace. That means food, water, first aid, a blanket, a flashlight, and extra flashlight batteries, for instance. It also means a triangle reflector, tire sealant, a tire pressure gauge and tire inflator, jumper cables, and perhaps even a few flares. Thirdly, it means extra motor oil, antifreeze, and windshield washer solution.
There's plenty more you could add, too, such as a tool kit or a pocket knife. You're the best judge of what you need to put in, after all. Just try to base it on what you'd probably need if you were to get stranded.
